At San Juan College, students from all walks of life discover opportunities that change their future. James Johnson is one example of how persistence and involvement can open doors.
From Retail to Rocket Science
After earning his HiSET (high school equivalency credential) and working in retail sales, James knew he wanted more. That desire led him to SJC, where he began studying computer science and quickly became engaged in campus life.
Building Leadership Through AISES
In 2023, James joined the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES). At the time, the SJC chapter included only two members and one advisor. Within a year, James stepped into a leadership role as president and helped rebuild the organization.
SJC’s AISES also gained national recognition. In December 2024, that recognition became official, making San Juan College one of only two community colleges in New Mexico with an active chapter. Today, the group proudly serves 28 members, connecting students with scholarships, internships and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
Opportunities Beyond the Classroom
James’s involvement in AISES quickly created new opportunities. In 2024, he attended the National AISES Conference in San Antonio, Texas.
It was at this conference that James approached the NASA table with his resume in hand. Boldly asking for a walk-on interview, he impressed recruiters and was selected for a competitive 10-week paid internship with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) at Caltech in Pasadena, California. During the internship, Caltech provided housing, meals and additional support, ensuring James’s success while working alongside some of the brightest minds in the field.
Creating Connections Back Home
Returning to SJC after his NASA experience, James continued to create opportunities for others. He organized an AISES event that brought RTX-Raytheon representatives to campus, where 37 students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members gathered to learn about career pathways. The event sparked professional connections and even set the stage for a future Raytheon site visit planned for Spring 2025.
Recognized for Leadership
For his dedication and achievements, James received the 2024–2025 Rising Sun Leadership Award. This honor recognizes students who demonstrate outstanding leadership and inspire their peers. AISES advisor Alanna Chee praised his impact, saying, "His leadership values have created opportunities for other students to explore STEM fields, and his story shows that success at SJC isn’t about being perfect; it’s about being willing to learn, grow and give back."
Looking Toward the Future
James’s next step is transferring to a four-year university to study electrical engineering, with hopes of one day returning to NASA.
